Emergency Garage Door Repair for Hollister Homes
Broken spring or dead opener in Hollister? We cover doors built through the late 1980s, 15 miles out from our Gilroy shop, with the parts that era actually needs.

What Can Go Wrong
A lot of Hollister's garage doors are steel sectional units that went up as the town built out through the 1980s, right into 1989 as the median year here.
Hollister doors built later
That's later than much of the wider service area, where the typical house dates closer to 1976, so you're less likely to find an old wood-panel door and more likely to find a 16x7 double or 9x7 single steel door on torsion springs that have been doing their job quietly for three decades.
Springs past rated cycles
The springs on doors from that era are now well past the wind-cycle count they were rated for, which is why they let go without much warning. Openers installed in that same window are often the original chain-drive units, and the circuit boards in them are the first thing to fail when a power surge or a cold, damp morning hits.
Rust at panel seams
Rollers get noisy, cables fray at the drum, and the bottom panel on a steel door from 1989 construction starts to show rust where moisture collects at the seam. None of that is dramatic until the day the door won't move, and on a double door that's usually the spring, not the opener.

Why This Fails Locally
Hollister's housing stock, built out mostly between the 1960s and 1989, carries torsion hardware that was never upgraded alongside openers that got swapped out once, maybe twice, over 30-plus years. That mismatch is where failures start: a newer opener forcing a worn-out torsion spring, or a replacement spring sized for the original door weight that no longer matches a heavier insulated replacement panel installed later. The climate here runs mild with occasional freeze, so steel doesn't warp the way it does in harsher climates, but the same steel does pit and rust slowly at the bottom panel seam, and a stuck roller in a cold snap can snap a cable that's already thinning. At $101,979 median household income, lower than the $131,233 median across the wider area we cover, a lot of Hollister owners are holding off on full door replacement and running older hardware longer, which means the parts on the truck matter more here, not less.
What Is on the Truck
Because Hollister sits about 15 miles from our Gilroy shop, we load for the job before we leave, not after we see the door.
Torsion and extension spring stock
For doors from the 1965-1989 building window, that means torsion springs sized for both standard steel sectional doors and the heavier insulated replacements some owners have put in since, plus extension springs for older single-car doors that never got upgraded. We carry standard-lift and high-lift cable sets, nylon and steel rollers, and the circuit boards and logic boards that fit the chain-drive openers most common in homes from that era.
Unseen custom door limits
What we don't carry is anything for doors we haven't seen yet, like a custom wood door or a specialty steel panel with a discontinued match, and being honest about that up front saves a second trip once we know exactly what's on the wall.
Doing It Yourself
A torsion spring under tension can take a finger off, so that one call is not a DIY job regardless of your house's age. But there's plenty you can check before you call: make sure the opener isn't simply unplugged or tripped at the breaker, check that the photo-eye sensors near the floor track aren't knocked out of alignment or blocked by anything stored in front of them, and look at the track itself for a bent section where a car bumper might have clipped it. If the door is a double, 16x7 steel unit typical of Hollister's late-1970s-to-1989 construction and it won't budge at all, that's almost always the spring, and running the opener against a stuck spring just burns out the motor. Disconnect the opener's emergency release cord and try the door by hand if you can do it safely. If it's heavy and won't lift more than a few inches, stop there and call it in.
Questions
Common questions
How far out is Hollister from your shop, and does that affect the call?
Hollister is about 15 miles from our Gilroy location. We load the truck for the job type before heading out, so the drive doesn't change what repair you get, but it's part of why we ask what the door looks like and what year the house was built before we're on the road.
My opener is from the 1990s and just stopped working. Is that common here?
Yes. A lot of Hollister houses built through 1989 still run original or early-replacement chain-drive openers, and the circuit board is usually the failure point after three decades of use, especially after a power surge.
Do you carry parts for older steel doors on the truck?
We stock torsion and extension springs, cables, and rollers sized for the sectional steel doors common to Hollister's 1960s-1989 housing stock, along with chain-drive opener boards. Custom or discontinued door panels sometimes need a second trip once we've seen them.
Is it ever not worth repairing an old door?
If the door itself is rusted through at the bottom panel or the track is bent beyond straightening, a spring or cable repair won't fix the underlying problem, and we'll tell you that instead of patching it.
